5 September 2016: Christoph Mordasini - The statistic of planetary luminosities

The observation of extrasolar planets with the direct imaging technique constrains the thermodynamic state of young giant planets and thus the mechanisms that lead to their formation. In the first part of this talk an overview of the processes setting this thermodynamic state during planet formation will be given, addressing in particular the effects of the planetary gas accretion shock and the core mass.

In the second part, based on the core accretion formation model, the most important results obtained from planetary population synthesis regarding the statistics of planetary luminosities will be presented. This includes the mass-luminosity relation during both the formation and evolution phase, the post-formation entropy distribution for cold and hot gas accretion, as well as the distribution of planetary luminosities as a function of time.
